ICELANDIC LANGSPIL
This is a much more slender instrument than the Langeleik, with an unusual body shape. The body "bulges" (to the opposite side of the player) around the soundhole and the bottom of the instrument is flat, enabling it to stand upright. The headstock is wider than the typical mountain dulcimer, is slotted, and has three wooden (rosewood) tuning pegs. A thin diatonic fretboard is mounted on the top.
This instrument is also available in the "Americanized" version (6-1/2 fret and metal tuning pegs - pictured) or as a custom order wtih chromatic fretting. The Langspil is sometimes played with a bow, rather than by plucking or strumming. The standard woods used are black walnut for the body, Western red cedar for the top, and black walnut for the "wheel" rosette.
